Spa School 101 - Types of Spas

When considering becoming a spa owner, keep in mind that there are many different spa choices. Have an idea of what your expectations are. Whether you are using the spa for pure leisure enjoyment or for physical therapy, the following information will help you determine which spa is right for you.

Built-in Spas
A built-in spa is a permanent structure that is built into the ground, or is attached to your in ground pool. The plumbing is underground and the equipment is placed elsewhere for easy access. Some built-in spas are made out of a pre-formed acrylic shell, which is inserted into the ground. Others are custom built using concrete, which allows for any shape or design you desire.

Portable Spas
A portable spa is a stand-a-lone system that can sit on a patio, deck, or built to fit into a room inside your home. There are many different manufacturers and models to choose from that give you flexibility in options and prices. Some portable spas have hard shells that have all the plumbing and equipment enclosed. There are also soft-side portable spas made out of soft foam, or the mother of all spas, the wooden spa, which is made out of wooden barrel staves.

Spa, Hot Tub or Whirlpool?
What’s difference between a spa and a hot tub? In the past, the word “spa” referred to a place you would go to visit natural mineral hot springs. The term “hot tub” originated when people began using wooden barrels to soak in. These days the two terms are used interchangeably and refer to all kinds of hot water baths. The term “whirlpool” is usually reserved for the smaller jetted bathtub units that are found in many modern home bathrooms
