Pool Water Chemistry – An Introduction
Pool water chemistry is one of the most important, yet often most neglected,
areas of pool care. Although it can seem confusing, it does not have
to be complicated once you learn and understand the facts. Good water
balance provides healthy, inviting water and also protects your swimming
pool investment. Unbalanced water can be unhealthy and a threat to the
life of your pool and its equipment because of its scaling and corrosive
tendencies.
Your water is constantly changing. Anything and everything can directly
and indirectly affect your water balance from weather factors such as
sunlight and rain to dirt, oil and other substances that enter the water
from people, objects and the environment. Maintaining water chemistry
requires constant monitoring, testing and adjusting. Once proper water
chemistry is achieved, though, it can be lost within 24 hours. However,
the time and effort spent on achieving proper water chemistry is minimal
when you think of the benefit to you and the protection on your investment.
