Pool School 101 - Playing It Safe

PLAYING IT SAFE

Fun and safety should always go hand in hand with your pool. Although nothing can replace adult supervision there are some additional guidelines to follow to help keep your pool a safe place for your family and friends. Be sure that good times are safe times!

1. Having an adult present and supervising any pool activities, regardless of swimmers’ ages and abilities, can be your first defense against injuries and mishaps. There is no substitute for competent, constant adult supervision.
2. Never leave a child unsupervised and out of eye contact in or near the pool – not even for a second. If you must leave the pool area, even momentarily, take your child with you.
3. Use the buddy system – never allow anyone to swim alone.
4. Designate a specific person to be the pool supervisor. Don’t just assume that someone is watching the kids.
5. Take a lifesaving course – a wonderful gift to yourself and others.
6. Keep lifesaving equipment nearby at all times in case of emergency. These items should remain stationary and not be misplaced.
7. Teach your kids to swim and be sure that you are aware of all your guests ’ swimming abilities as well.
8. Establish pool rules and consistently enforce them. Make sure everyone knows your pool rules by posting them visibly near your pool.
9. Install and properly maintain a multiple barrier system. Barriers include: fences, gates, and pool safety covers.
10. Pool, door and gate alarms can give you early warning of any unexpected entry into your pool.
11. Keep a cordless or cellular phone at your poolside. Not only does this eliminate the need to leave the pool area to answer your phone, but also now your phone is close by in case of emergency.
12. A “no glass” rule around your pool is a smart safety policy. Use plastic products instead.
13. Use depth markings to clearly indicate the depth of the water.
14. Only use a pool ladder or staircase to enter or exit your pool.
15. Do not use diving boards, slides, trampolines or similar objects on aboveground/onground pools.
16. Get out of the water immediately if a storm approaches.
17. Keep your pool chemicals in a separate locked storage area away from the water and out of children’s reach. Make sure that all chemical products are clearly marked and that you’ve reviewed proper storage and usage guidelines. Improperly mixing chemicals can be dangerous.
